A bloke bizarrely displayed a Nazi flag from his apartment in the US to seemingly gain attention so he could get help finding his missing fiancée.

After his neighbours in Chicago's Edgewater district expressed their horror at the Nazi flag flying in the windows of his apartment, Peter Craig told reporters that there’s a perfectly rational reason for it.

Residents in the ethnically-mixed and LGBT-friendly neighbourhood were stunned when Craig hung the flags in every window of his apartment.

Patricia Guerrero, the owner of nearby restaurant Edgewater Tacos, told local news station ABC7: "To have that swastika flag there makes me sick to my stomach”.

"I'm Latina. I don't want that. I don't want to live in fear because that's not what Edgewater's about," she added.

Another local, Matthew Rais, said that has always felt welcomed in the area.

Matthew, who is Jewish, said that the Nazi ideology was a “lost cause,” adding: “We're all Americans and we need to come together in unity”.

But Craig insists that he’s just misunderstood, explaining that he up the flags up to get attention for his missing fiancée, Ariana Daniels.

"I don't like Nazis," he said. "Nobody likes Nazis. Nobody likes what happened in World War II. But everybody in America deserves to have their home as their sanctuary".

In response to the flags, Craig’s landlords, Root Realty, issued him with an eviction notice and he says he’s “currently in discussions” about taking them down.

Latest reports suggest that the swastikas are still in place.

He insists he’s not a Nazi, telling reporters: ”I’m not a skinhead…I am not a skinhead. I'm a long-haired, peace loving, freaky hippy”.

In a statement Craig’s landlords said: ”Root Realty abhors the hate symbol that a tenant in a building we manage displayed in the tenant's window.

"We are doing everything possible to get this resolved within the bounds of what we are legally permitted to do.

"We've been in communication with the individual, with building residents, legal counsel, the alderman's office, and law enforcement," they added.

"We have and will be continuing to communicate with all residents in the building on updates and steps we are taking to address the situation."
