Elon Musk explains how to pronounce his son’s name as billionaire buys Twitter

It's been almost two years since world's richest man Elon Musk and the musician Grimes welcomed their son into the world.

While some parents are happy with names like 'Michael', 'Douglas', or 'Cher' and 'Adele', Musk and Grimes went one step further. In typical fashion, the eccentric couple gave their son a truly unique name that, two years later, people still can't seem to be able to pronounce.

The 50-year-old Tesla founder first broke the news in May 2020 over Twitter (which he now owns), sharing a snap of the newborn with the caption "X Æ A-12 Musk".

Musk was met with immediate confusion as people struggled to pronounce the name.

Some were convinced the name was pronounced as "X Ash Archangel" in reference to a Lockheed aircraft that is nicknamed Archangel.

Musk himself joked about the pronunciation of the name on Saturday Night Live last year, saying: "It's pronounced 'cat running across the keyboard'."

X Æ A-12 is the couple's first child together, though Elon has five other children from previous marriages – twins Griffin and Xavier and triplets Damian, Saxon and Kai.

How to pronounce Elon Musk's kid's name – and what it means

Despite jokes about the name, it does actually have a pronunciation.

Musk appeared on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast in May 2020 to explain exactly how the name is said: "X Ash A 12".

However, Grimes and Musk affectionately shorten this to 'Ash'.

Ash's name even has a special meaning. Shortly after the birth, Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) tweeted a breakdown about what each character or symbol meant in her son's name too.

She said the X was "the unknown variable", and the Æ was her "elven spelling of Ai (love and or artificial intelligence).

Meanwhile, the A-12 was the "precursor to SR-17 (our favourite aircraft)", adding: "No weapons, no defences, just speed, Great in battle, but non-violent."

Musk and Grimes reportedly had a second child via a surrogate in December, although they decided to keep things simpler this time around by only calling the baby 'Y'.
