Revealed: the apps using the most data on your phone

It’s more than likely you’ve got a lot of apps on your phone.

But how much data are they busily sucking away whilst you tap and swipe your way through them?

The answer, of course, depends on how much you use said apps. Perhaps Snapchat is your go-to or you’re all about TikTok.

But inevitably, those little icons on your home screen are busy slurping through your data allowance one way or another.

Leading mobile phone reseller Buymobiles.net decided to look into this topic and compiled some handy stats. They figured out the average use time of many of the most popular apps and then dug into how much data slurpage that equals out to.

For example, video-heavy TikTok used 740MB for an average daily use of 53 minutes.

That works out to roughly 840MB per hour of use.

By comparison, Snapchat only needs 80MB for the average amount of use on that app – which is 30 minutes.

Which works out to 160MB per hour – considerably less than TikTok.

Digging deeper, the company compared Facebook and Twitter’s respective apps.

‘Both platforms boast a similar layout and types of content. You get a mixture of images, videos and text-only posts on a feed that you scroll through,’ the team explained.

‘Despite this, Twitter actually uses 160MB of data per hour than Facebook does. We averaged that typical users spend roughly 145 minutes a day.

‘Don’t worry, we did the math, so you don’t have to. This means the typical Twitter user would drain 870MB compared to Facebookers who would use 242MB in the same time.’

If you’re more of a visual person, don’t worry – the kind folks at Buymobiles.net laid it out in a handy infographic.

Why is it important to know this? Well, for starters it means you can squeeze more value out of your package. Most phones will let you place time limits on app usage to help you manage your time better.

Jess Canning, Mobile Phone Expert at Buymobiles told Metro.co.uk: ‘It’s been very interesting to see how the most popular apps match up against each other in terms of data usage.’

‘These apps are a part of our everyday lives and in learning about how much data they use, we’re hoping our customers can choose a tariff plan that’s perfect for them.
