New iOS 15.2 feature lets you check if your iPhone is dodgy

With a top-of-the-range iPhone 13 Pro Max clocking in at well over £1,000, it's easy to understand why so many people turn to phone shops or eBay to pick up cheaper second-hand iPhones.

However, second-hand iPhones don't always work as well as they do fresh off the production line, and users have no way of being able to tell whether they've bought the genuine product 'like new' or have been sold a badly 'refurbished' pup with dodgy knock-off parts.

Luckily, the new iOS 15.2 update finally lets you see the full service history of your device, including what parts have been modified or replaced, and whether all the parts in your iPhone come from a genuine Apple-approved source.

How to check if your iPhone is genuine with iOS 15.2's 'Parts and Service History' feature

Part of the reason Apple has introduced the new 'Parts and Service History' feature to its devices is because the company wants to make it easier for people to repair their devices, either through DIY or through independent repair shops.

So if you've just taken your iPhone or iPad for a screen repair, you can now check where the screen came from—whether it's an official Apple part, or a generic copy.

To view your iPhone or iPad's 'Parts and Service History', tap the Settings app on your home screen, and then follow the instructions below.

  • Stop annoying iPhone notifications using these top tricks – and Apple's Focus Mode

  1. In Settings, tap 'General', then 'About'
  2. This page will show you information such as your iPhone's serial number. Scroll down and you'll see 'Parts and Service History'
  3. Tap on whichever part you want and you'll be able to see whether it's a genuine Apple part.
  4. Tap on the part to see more information about exactly when the part was serviced or replaced. If it's not an official part, it will say 'Unknown Part' with an exclamation mark

It's important to remember that plenty of non-branded iPhone parts still work exactly as described, so unless you have a problem with your phone, there is no need to worry.
