Social media giant Facebook and its associated platforms are experiencing issues this evening. Users have reported issues with the platform, messaging service WhatsApp and photo sharing app Instagram. Site Down Detector has been flooded with reports in the last hour.

Has Facebook been hacked?

Facebook is down, with thousands of reports stating issues this evening.

Down Detector currently states: “User reports indicate problems at Facebook.”

The site has collated reports from approximately 36,298 people.

The reports have led people to fear Facebook was hacked as they take refuge on the last remaining social media platform; Twitter.

One user, Tony, said: “Facebook including WhatsApp & Insta facing technical issues. Somebody hacked?”

Another, Trillian, added: “Looks like Facebook has crashed, as of right now 5pm in the UK.

“Must be serious if the entire system has gone down. I wonder if it’s been hacked?”

Facebook and WhatsApp have also posted via Twitter, with no mention of a specific cause.

In a statement, Facebook said they were aware “some people are having trouble” accessing the app.

They added they would work to “get things back to normal as quickly as possible” and apologised for the inconvenience.

WhatsApp posted an almost identical statement, thanking people for their patience as they worked “to get things back to normal.”

The WhatsApp statement reads: “We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with WhatsApp at the moment.

“We’re working to get things back to normal. Thanks for your patience!”
