An unlikely scheme to make diamonds out of virtually nothing has been launched by British entrepreneur Dale Vince.
Vince claims to have developed a technique to synthesise the precious gems from “nothing more than the sky”.
Diamond mining is a dangerous and massively polluting enterprise. Producing a one-carat diamond can involve moving up to a thousand metric tons of earth, using 3,890 litres of water and creating over 100kg of carbon dioxide emissions.
But Vince says he can produce the “world’s first zero-impact diamond.” In fact, he claims, he can produce a net positive effect because his new technique helps remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
“Making diamonds from nothing more than the sky, from the air we breathe – is a magical, evocative idea – it’s modern alchemy,” Vince told the Guardian.
“We don’t need to mine the earth to have diamonds, we can mine the sky.”
His diamond “factory” in Gloucestershire will use a new process called chemical vapour deposition to create the diamonds.
It will use green energy to heat a “diamond seed” to 800ºC in a gas-filled chamber.
The “seed” will then create a diamond structurally indistinguishable from the precious sparklers that take millions upon millions of years to form naturally underground.
If Vince can produce flawless diamonds on demand, it will undoubtedly reduce the value of diamonds on the world market. He says he hasn’t yet decided how much he will charge for his eco-friendly “sky diamonds”.
Synthetic diamonds are becoming increasingly popular as knowledge of the ecological and human cost of the “real thing” becomes more widespread.
This isn’t Vince’s only eco-friendly initiative.
Since becoming chairman of Forest Green Rovers FC in 2010 he has moulded the club into the UK’s only all vegan football team.
Rovers players are banned from eating red meat, and the sale of all meat products is banned at the club's ground.
Fans wanting a mid-match snack have to choose between vegetarian options, free-range poultry and fish from sustainable stocks.
