iOS 14 release date confirmed for tomorrow, but will the update work on your iPhone?

Apple has now officially revealed when its new iOS 14 operating system will be released to iPhones across the world and there’s not too long to wait. The US technology firm made the big announcement during its recent September keynote event, which also saw the arrival of a new Apple Watch Series 6, low-cost Apple Watch SE, and completely-redesigned iPad Air. And as the one-hour presentation was wrapping up – Apple confirmed that iPhone owners across the globe would be able to download iOS 14 tomorrow morning (September 16, 2020).

Although there’s no exact time for the release, major iOS updates usually arrive at around 6pm BST so if you want the latest features on your iPhone make sure your sitting comfortably around that time and have access to Wi-Fi as the file won’t be small.

As you have an iPhone 6s or later, once downloaded, your device will get a swathe of blockbuster new features including the introduction of Android-style widgets. These data-packed squares can be placed on the homescreen with information such as the latest weather, news, music and health reports all available at launch.

These useful widgets aren’t the only new feature with iOS 14 also including improved messaging, more customisable Memojis and something called the App Library. This automatically organises all of your apps into one simple, easy-to-navigate view, and even intelligently surfaces apps that may be helpful at the right moment.

Another change is a feature called App Clips. Instead of downloading a dedicated application for every takeaway order or cinema ticket purchase, Apple’s App Clips lets you access the most important part of the app straight from the homescreen.

Other changes include improved messaging, better browsing in Safari and a picture-in-picture mode so you can keep watching videos or continue your FaceTime call while you use another app.

The all-new operating system will run on the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, the original iPhone SE, and everything released since. In a nutshell, if your smartphone is currently running iOS 13, you’ll be able to use iOS 14.

“iOS 14 transforms the most iconic elements of the iPhone experience, starting with the biggest update we’ve ever made to the Home Screen,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering. “With beautifully redesigned widgets on the Home Screen, the App Library that automatically organizes all of your apps, and App Clips that are fast and easy to discover, iPhone becomes even more powerful and easier to use.”
