Gigantic 60-foot Gundam robot takes its first steps

Japan has a bit of a mild obsession with huge mechanised robots.

One of the most popular is the Gundam series – a science fiction franchise compromising anime films and TV shows, video games and comics.

In fact, it’s so popular it’s earned over $5 billion and is the 15th highest-grossing media franchise in the world.

Once completed, it will act as a major tourist attraction for the city. And it’s not just going to stand there idly, either. Oh no – this thing is going to move.

Footage shot earlier this month shows the massive mech taking its first ever steps. It was hoped that construction would finish by October 2020 in time for a grand opening – however, the coronavirus pandemic may have delayed that opening indefinitely.

As you can see from the video above, it’s certainly an impressive sight. Even though it doesn’t yet have a head.
